Based on a qualitative case study of the former Federal Asylum Office of Austria, the book provides sociological insight into governmental action on the administration of asylum in the European context. It offers an unprecedented view through the perspective of organizational sociology with a link to broader social theory and goes beyond traditional street-level bureaucracy approaches by including theories of social practice, structuration, and social construction. After an exploration of the context and circumstances of work, the structural contradictions characterizing caseworkers’ day-to-day work are analyzed; the book concludes by pointing out the necessary attention to ethics in public administration, especially in the context of international protection.
