<dc:description xml:lang="en">The book investigates the “Golden Age” of Yugoslav cinema through focusing on tropes and discourses of the “archaic”, which shaped not only a flourishing cinematic modernism in the 1960s but also a broader Yugoslav cultural politics. Through conceptualizing the “archaic” as a crossroads where Marxism intersects with Balkanism, while both are circumscribed by a general distrust towards representation, it opens new perspectives on a politics of aesthetics that informed some of the most successful Yugoslav films of all times. Furthermore, its theoretical findings extend to broader contexts in which political and artistic movements seek to present themselves as avant-garde while confronting discourses that assign them time-lag.</dc:description>
