Mit der Erforschung von Luft, luftgetragenen Phänomenen und der Darstellung von Elementen untersucht dieses Buch die Materialität der Luft und beleuchtet die poröse Natur der Luft sowohl im wörtlichen als auch im übertragenen Sinne: Luft als Raum, der andere Elemente, Partikel und Lebewesen enthält und mit ihnen interagiert, und Luft als Materie, die Objekte, Räume und Zeit bewegt, umhüllt und durchdringt. Dieses Buch behandelt die materiellen Eigenschaften der Luft unter anderem aus den Perspektiven von Gewalt, Toxizität, Umweltverschmutzung, Kapitalismus, Klimawandel und Übertragung und setzt sich so direkt mit Repräsentation, Krise und Wohlbefinden auseinander. Die Kapitel stützen sich auf Perspektiven aus den Umwelt-, Gesundheits-, Kultur-, Literatur-, Kunst- und Geschichtswissenschaften, befassen sich mit Literatur, Kultur, Ökologie und Gesellschaft und analysieren dadurch die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen Menschen, „more-than-humans“ und der Umwelt.

Exploring air, airborne phenomena, and elemental representation, this book dissects the materiality of air and illuminates the porous nature of air both literally and figuratively: air as space that contains and engages with other elements, particles, and beings, and air as matter that moves, envelopes, and penetrates objects, spaces, and time. It investigates air’s material qualities through the lenses of violence, toxicity, pollution, capitalism, climate change, and transmission, among others, and thus directly engages with representation, crisis, and well-being. Drawing on perspectives from the environmental humanities, health humanities, cultural studies, literary studies, art, and history, studying literature and culture, ecology and society, the chapters consider the complex relationships between humans, more-than-humans, and the environment more broadly.
